Gas Station Grub

When road-tripping or traveling in a car (or a truck pulling a fifth-wheel), we often reach our worst level of hangriness! *Cue the film “Psycho”‘s stabbing-in-the-shower music* When there aren’t restaurants or grocery stores in sight, or we haven’t prepared snacks or lunches for the long day’s drive, we often resort to picking up a few things when we fuel up. Here’s the best (vegan-friendly) foods we find at gas stations:

  • Fruit – apples, oranges, and bananas. Some now have containers of pre-cut fruit like cantaloupe, watermelon, or grapes too!
  • Nuts/Seeds/Trailmix – peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pistacios… you name it!
  • Popcorn – plain, sea-salted, or kettle
  • Bars – usually tons to choose from! My favorites are Larabar, Kind, or Cliff.

What food takes the crown as my most favorite?

  • Bean Dip and Tortilla Chips – this combo has become my MOST favorite gas station find! The Fritos bean dip is made from beans, oil, and spices. It is by no means the healthiest option, but for long days of driving, it keeps me fuller for longer.

P.S. If you’re looking to splurge or have something sugary sweet (besides Nutterbutters and Oreos), check out:

  • Lenny and Larry’s Complete Cookie – this egg and dairy free cookie has surprisingly been popping up at several of the gas stations and truck stops we have patroned. While it’s still a cookie, they have added fiber and protein, so it makes eating a cookie feel better.
